The Metaverse in Higher Education: Opportunities, Challenges, and Pathways Forward

Abstract

The metaverse, a persistent, multi-user digital space that combines virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and avatars, has drawn growing interest from higher education institutions. This narrative review brings together recent literature to give a clear, integrated picture of what the metaverse is and what it means for universities. It first explains the metaverse's core technologies and the main ways researchers classify its applications. It then reviews the opportunities the metaverse offers higher education, including immersive and simulation-based training, wider and more flexible access, personalized and AI-supported instruction, and new forms of engagement and collaboration. The review also examines the challenges that come with these opportunities: high infrastructure costs, privacy and security risks, ethical and regulatory gaps, concerns about psychological well-being, and an evidence base that remains geographically narrow and, in places, mixed. Based on this evidence, the review argues that higher education institutions are best served by a cautious, selective approach to adoption, one that matches investment in technology with investment in governance, educator support, and rigorous evaluation.
